Build a Research-Driven Content Calendar

Use Claude and the Apify connector to scrape what is working in your niche, then turn those winning patterns into a full month of original content in your voice.

25 minutes Intermediate July 2026

Purpose

This SOP walks you through building a content calendar that starts from real data instead of guesswork. Claude uses the Apify connector to scrape recent posts from competitor accounts in your niche, ranks them by engagement, extracts the hook patterns that are working right now, and then builds your own calendar using those patterns as a foundation. Every piece of content comes out in your voice, with a clear paper trail back to the research that inspired it.

Prerequisites

  • A Claude Pro or Team plan (projects require a paid plan)
  • A Claude Project with your brand voice, offer, and audience docs loaded (the "Business DNA" project)
  • The Apify MCP connector enabled on your Claude account
  • A list of 8 to 12 competitor or adjacent-niche Instagram handles
  • Google Sheets access (optional, for the final export)
01

Set up your project

Open Claude and navigate to your Business DNA project. This is the project that holds your four foundational documents: who you are, what you offer, who you serve, and how you sound. If you have not built this project yet, create one now and add those four files before continuing.

Your project instructions should include rules for your content voice. At minimum, include lines like "never use em dashes" and "always write as one person talking to one person." The sharper your instructions, the better the output.

TIP

Keep your project lean. When you stuff a project with every old file, Claude stops reading properly and starts pulling fragments. Four documents and a tight set of instructions is all your content employee needs.

02

Connect Apify

The Apify connector gives Claude the ability to scrape public Instagram posts. You need to connect it once, and it stays available across all your projects.

  1. In your Claude project, open the connectors panel (the plug icon in the sidebar or the integrations menu)
  2. Search for Apify and click Connect
  3. Authorise the connection when prompted. Apify will ask for permission to run actors on your behalf
  4. Once connected, you will see Apify listed as an active connector in your project

NOTE

The Instagram scraper actor on Apify uses credits. A small research batch (2 posts per account across 10 to 12 accounts) costs very little, but running large scrapes repeatedly will consume credits faster. Start small.

03

Run the competitor research

This is the step that separates this system from a generic content calendar. Instead of inventing ideas from scratch, you start with what is already working in your niche.

In a new chat inside your Business DNA project, paste the research prompt below. Before you run it, replace the placeholder handles with real accounts in your space.

You want three groups of handles:

  1. 8 to 10 direct competitors or peers in your niche
  2. 2 to 3 accounts from a nearby niche your audience also follows
  3. 2 to 3 accounts from a second adjacent niche

The prompt tells Claude to use the apify/instagram-post-scraper actor with resultsType: posts and pull the last 2 posts per account. It then ranks every post by likes plus comments and keeps the top 5.

Prompt Use Apify to pull recent posts from these accounts in my space: [@handle1, @handle2, @handle3, @handle4, @handle5, @handle6, @handle7, @handle8]. Then pull from two nearby niches my audience also follows: [@adjacent1, @adjacent2, @adjacent3], and [@adjacent4, @adjacent5]. Use the apify/instagram-post-scraper actor, resultsType posts, the last 2 posts per account. Rank every post by likes plus comments and keep the top 5.

IMPORTANT

Tell Claude to stop after this step. If you let it run straight through, it will build a calendar without letting you review the research first, and the calendar will be weaker for it.

04

Read the winners

Once the research comes back, tell Claude to break down the top 5 posts for you. For each post, you want:

  1. The opening line (the hook)
  2. The format: reel, carousel, talking head, screen demo
  3. The topic
  4. One line on why it worked

After the individual breakdowns, ask Claude to show you the hook patterns that keep repeating across the winners. This is the insight layer. You are not copying any single post. You are seeing the patterns underneath them.

Prompt For each of the top 5 posts, give me the opening line, the format (reel, carousel, talking head, screen demo), the topic, and one line on why it worked. Then show me the hook patterns that keep repeating across them. Stop here. Show me this before you build anything.

Review the patterns. If something looks off or irrelevant to your audience, tell Claude to drop it. This review step is what keeps your calendar grounded.

05

Build the content calendar

Once you are happy with the research and the patterns, tell Claude to build the calendar. The prompt below generates 3 days with 3 posts per day (Reel, Carousel, Reel). For a full month, change "3 days" to "30 days" and let it run longer.

Prompt Turn those winning patterns into a 3-day calendar, three posts a day, in this exact column order: Day, Slot, Type, Topic, Format, Hook, Caption, Reel Script or Carousel Slides, CTA, Keyword, Lead Magnet or Destination, Proven Format. The three daily slots are Reel 1, then Carousel, then Reel 2. Write every row in full, no placeholders. Hooks written out. Captions written out. Reel scripts with the screen cues in brackets. Carousel slides numbered slide by slide. In the Proven Format column, name the scraped post or the pattern each row is modeled on, so I can see the proof behind every idea. Route the CTAs to my lead magnets: [KEYWORD one for X], [KEYWORD two for Y]. Keep every word in my voice. No em dashes. Talk like one person to one person. Build this as a spreadsheet first so it is fast. Do not jump into a designed artifact.

The "Proven Format" column is what makes this system trustworthy. Every row traces back to a real post or a repeated pattern from the research, so you always know why an idea is there.

06

Export to Google Sheets

Once you have reviewed the calendar and approved it (or corrected any rows that need adjusting), tell Claude to save it.

Prompt Write the approved calendar into a new Google Sheet called "[Your Brand] Content Calendar - [Month Year]", same columns.

Claude will create the sheet in your connected Google Drive. From there, you can share it with whoever posts for you, or use it as your own reference while scheduling.

TIP

If you do not have Google Drive connected to Claude, you can also ask Claude to output the calendar as a CSV file and import it into Sheets manually.

Full Prompt (Copy and Customise)

This is the complete prompt in one block. Paste it into a new chat inside your Business DNA project, replace the bracketed placeholders, and run each step in sequence.

Prompt Build me a 3-day Instagram content calendar for [my niche], grounded in what is actually working right now, not guesses. Work through these steps and stop where I tell you to. STEP 1. RESEARCH. Use Apify to pull recent posts from these accounts in my space: [8 to 10 handles]. Then pull from two nearby niches my audience also follows: [2 to 3 handles], and [2 to 3 handles]. Use the apify/instagram-post-scraper actor, resultsType posts, the last 2 posts per account. Rank every post by likes plus comments and keep the top 5. STEP 2. READ THE WINNERS. STOP AND SHOW ME. For each of these, give me the opening line, the format (reel, carousel, talking head, screen demo), the topic, and one line on why it worked. Then show me the hook patterns that keep repeating across them. Stop here. Show me this before you build anything. STEP 3. BUILD 3 DAYS. Turn those winning patterns into a 3-day calendar, three posts a day, in this exact column order: Day, Slot, Type, Topic, Format, Hook, Caption, Reel Script or Carousel Slides, CTA, Keyword, Lead Magnet or Destination, Proven Format. The three daily slots are Reel 1, then Carousel, then Reel 2. Write every row in full, no placeholders. Hooks written out. Captions written out. Reel scripts with the screen cues in brackets. Carousel slides numbered slide by slide. In the Proven Format column, name the scraped post or the pattern each row is modeled on. Route the CTAs to my lead magnets: [KEYWORD one for X], [KEYWORD two for Y]. Keep every word in my voice. No em dashes. Talk like one person to one person. Build this as a spreadsheet first so it is fast. Do not jump into a designed artifact. STEP 4. SAVE IT. Once I approve the table, write it into a new Google Sheet called [name], same columns.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I build a full 30-day calendar instead of 3 days?

Yes. Change "3 days" to "30 days" in the prompt. It takes longer for Claude to generate, but the output is the same structure. Three days is used here so you can review the quality before committing to a full month.

What if some of the competitor handles are private accounts?

Apify can only scrape public accounts. If a handle is private, the scraper will return no results for that account. Replace private handles with public ones in the same niche.

Do I need an Apify account?

The Apify MCP connector handles authentication. You may need to create a free Apify account if you have not used the connector before, but the connection flow walks you through it.

What if the content calendar sounds generic?

That usually means the project instructions are too thin. Add real samples of your writing to your project, and make sure your voice document includes specific patterns to follow and avoid. The research is only half the equation. Your voice rules are the other half.

Can I use this for TikTok or LinkedIn instead of Instagram?

The research step uses an Instagram scraper, so the data source is Instagram. But the calendar-building step works for any platform. You can modify the column headers and post types to match TikTok or LinkedIn formats.
