What You Get

The Prompt Builder is a Claude skill that diagnoses weak, vague, or underperforming prompts and rebuilds them into clear, context-rich, high-performing prompts you can copy and use immediately.

Inside the zip file

  • SKILL.md — the main skill file with the full diagnostic and rebuild workflow, including the 12 prompt failure modes, step-by-step rebuild process, and output formatting rules
  • references/frameworks.md — a reference library of prompt engineering frameworks (COSTAR, APE, RTF, chain-of-thought, few-shot, XML structuring, and more) that the skill draws from when rebuilding your prompts

Once installed, Claude will automatically activate this skill whenever you paste a prompt that needs fixing, ask for prompt help, or describe a task you want a better prompt for. You do not need to type a special command.

02

Verify Installation

After uploading, confirm the skill is installed and active.

  1. In the Skills section of the Customize panel, look for Prompt Builder in the list of installed skills.
  2. Make sure the toggle or status next to it shows the skill is enabled.
  3. Close the Customize panel. The skill is now active across all your conversations.

NOTE

Skills installed at the account level via Customize are available in all conversations and projects. You do not need to install them per-project.

06

Start Using the Skill

Open a new conversation in Claude. The Prompt Builder skill activates automatically when you do any of the following:

  1. Paste a weak prompt and ask Claude to improve it. Example: "This prompt keeps giving me generic responses. Can you fix it?"
  2. Describe what you need and let the skill build the prompt from scratch. Example: "I need a prompt that writes Instagram captions for a fitness coach."
  3. Ask for a diagnosis. Example: "What's wrong with this prompt and how do I make it better?"

The skill will run a diagnostic audit against 12 common failure modes, explain what is missing, and produce a rebuilt prompt you can copy and use right away.

07

Example Prompts to Try

Here are a few things you can paste into Claude right now to see the skill in action:

Prompt My prompt: "Write me a marketing email." Why does this keep giving me boring, generic emails? Fix it.
Prompt I need a prompt that writes weekly LinkedIn posts for a SaaS founder who talks about AI automation. Casual tone, 150-200 words, with a hook and a CTA. Build me the best version.
Prompt Here is my current prompt: "You are an expert copywriter. Write a sales page." What's wrong with it and how do I make it 10x better?

Each of these will trigger the skill's full workflow: diagnosis, framework selection, and a rebuilt prompt with a before/after comparison.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

FAQs

What does the Prompt Builder skill do?

It diagnoses weak or underperforming AI prompts and rebuilds them into clear, context-rich, high-performing prompts. It uses frameworks like COSTAR, chain-of-thought, few-shot prompting, and Anthropic's prompt engineering best practices to produce prompts you can copy, paste, and use immediately.

Do I need to unzip the file before uploading?

No. Claude accepts the zip file directly. Drag and drop the .zip file as-is into the Customize panel's Skills section.

Does the skill work on mobile?

You can use the skill in conversations on any device. However, uploading and managing skills is easiest through the Claude web interface or desktop app on a computer.

Can I use this skill inside a Claude Project?

Yes. Once installed at the account level via Customize, the skill is available across all your conversations and projects automatically.

Do I need to type a special command to activate the skill?

No. Claude detects when your message is about improving, fixing, or building a prompt and activates the skill automatically. You can also type /anthropic-skills:prompt-builder in the message bar to invoke it manually.

What if I already have the skill installed?

If you see "Prompt Builder" in your Skills list inside Customize, you are good to go. Skip to Step 6 and start using it.

Troubleshooting

The zip file will not upload

Make sure you are dragging the original .zip file, not an unzipped folder. If drag-and-drop fails, try the upload button inside the Skills section. Also confirm you are on the Customize panel, not a Project settings page.

The skill does not appear after upload

Refresh the page and reopen the Customize panel. If the skill still does not show, try downloading the zip again and re-uploading. The file may have been corrupted during download.

Claude is not using the skill in conversation

Open Customize and confirm the skill toggle is enabled. Then start a new conversation (existing conversations may not pick up newly installed skills). Try pasting a prompt and explicitly asking "What's wrong with this prompt?"
